Bunions: Causes, relief & the best shoes for comfort

If you’ve noticed a bony bump near your big toe, you may have a bunion. Bunions are common and can make walking or wearing shoes uncomfortable or even painful. The good news? The right shoes can help relieve pressure and support your feet, so you can keep moving comfortably.

Let’s learn more about bunions, how to relieve pain, and which shoes support your feet.

What is a bunion?

A bunion (also called hallux valgus) is a misalignment of the joint at the base of the big toe. Over time, the big toe gradually shifts inward toward the other toes, causing the joint to stick outward. That’s the bump you see on the side of the foot.

Bunions can range from mild to severe. Some people barely notice them, while others experience pain or soreness, swelling and redness, pressure in shoes, difficulty walking comfortably, and/or stiffness in the big toe. All the more reason to discover how you can ease the pain and discomfort.

What causes a bunion?

While the direct cause of bunions is still relatively unknown, there are some things we know have an impact on the development of a bunion. Foot shape and structure are often inherited. If bunions run in your family, you may be more likely to develop them too. Flat feet can also affect the alignment of the toe. Age influences our foot structure too. After years of carrying your body, your feet might start to develop bunions. Another reason you might be developing bunions is thanks to unsupportive shoes. Shoes that squeeze the toes together – especially narrow styles or high heels – can aggravate the problem and make bunions progress faster.

Can shoes help with relieving bunion pain?

Good shoes can help relieve pain in your bunions. Unfortunately, there’s no magical cure. While the right shoes cannot erase the bunion, they can help relieve discomfort, reduce pressure, and support your feet properly. We’ll discuss some of the features of shoes for bunions below.

Stretch material

Shoes made with stretch panels or soft, flexible materials adapt to the shape of your foot instead of forcing your foot into the shape of the shoe. Stretch materials can help by reducing pressure on the bunion, preventing rubbing and friction, creating more room for the toes, accommodating swelling throughout the day. For women with bunions, stretchy materials can feel like a small miracle.

Now here’s the important part: soft and stretchy is wonderful – but only when combined with proper support. Feet need cushioning and support to keep you moving comfortably throughout the day. That’s why supportive footbeds, stable soles, and high-quality materials matter just as much as stretchiness.

Wide toe box

A narrow toe box pushes your toes together and puts extra pressure on the bunion – exactly what feet with bunions don’t need. High heels also add extra pressure on your toes, squeezing them together. Your toes bear all your weight when you walk in high heels — not exactly what you’d call comfortable.

Shoes with a wide toe box give your toes the space to spread naturally. This helps reduce rubbing, pressure, and discomfort while walking. Combined with good support, a roomy fit can make everyday movement feel much more comfortable.
